He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble, pious. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 mother, father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
