He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and pious. 16 May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve? 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
