He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 You pay full attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We pour water in showers 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and palms 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
