He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 To him you give attention. 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Nay, (do not do like this), indeed it (these Verses of this Quran) are an admonition, 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing and joyous 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
