Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 enter My Paradise! 30
