Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
