Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
