Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 Serene soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
