Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
