Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
