Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the passing night, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
