Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
