Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and ten nights, 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 enter My Paradise! 30
