Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the daybreak, 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
