The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
