The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
