The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 in which you are now living 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
