Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
