Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
