The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
