The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 in which you are now living 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
