The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
