The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
God Almighty has spoken the truth.
