The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
