The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
