The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And [by] the moon when it follows it 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
