The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night enshrouding 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
