The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
