The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
