The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
