The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
