The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And rejects the best, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
