The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 and he belied the finest 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
