And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah 's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment. 73 "And remember when He made you successors after 'Ad (people) and gave you habitations in the land, you build for yourselves palaces in plains, and carve out homes in the mountains. So remember the graces (bestowed upon you) from Allah, and do not go about making mischief on the earth." 74 The leaders of the arrogant party among his people said to those who were reckoned powerless - those among them who believed: "know ye indeed that Salih is a messenger from his Lord?" They said: "We do indeed believe in the revelation which hath been sent through him." 75 Those who were haughty said: Surely we are deniers of what you believe in. 76 So they hamstrung the she-camel, and they flouted the commandment of their Lord, and they said: O Salih! Bring upon us that thou threatenest if thou art indeed of those sent (from Allah). 77 So the earthquake took them unawares, and they lay prostrate in their homes in the morning! 78 He turned from them, saying: 'I conveyed to you, my nation the Message of my Lord and gave you counsel; but you had no love for sincere advisers' 79 And We sent Lut, when he said unto his people: commit ye an indecency wherewith none hath preceded you in the worlds? 80 See, you approach men lustfully instead of women; no, you are a people that do exceed.' 81 But the answer of his people was only that they said, "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure." 82 So We saved him and his family -- except for his wife. She was one of those who stayed behind. 83 the while We rained a rain [of destruction] upon the others: and behold what happened in the end to those people lost in sin! 84
