The elders of Pharaoh's people said: 'Surely this man is a skilful magician 109 Who would expel you from your land. Now what do ye advise? 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 "That they bring up to you all well-versed sorcerers." 112 And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors. 113 Pharaoh replied, "Certainly, and you shall also become my courtiers." 114 They said: "O Moses! wilt thou throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 And [then] We inspired Moses, "Throw down thy staff!" - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions: 117 ۞ Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. 118 So they were vanquished there, and they turned about, humbled. 119 And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves 120 They said: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 I will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all' 124 They said: Lo! We are about to return unto our Lord! 125 You would take revenge on us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Lord, pour patience upon us and let us die as submitters (Muslims)' 126
