۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, and a Qur'an luminous. 1 It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims. 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know. 3 And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. 4 No community precedeth the term thereof nor doth it fall behind. 5 (The unbelievers have said), "You to whom the Quran has been revealed are insane. 6 "Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?" 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. 10 And never came a Messenger to them but they did mock him. 11 Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty: 12 So, they will not believe in it: The example of former people is there. 13 And even if We opened unto them a gate of heaven and they kept mounting through it, 14 Even then they would say, “Our sights have been hypnotised – in fact, a magic spell has been cast upon us.” 15
