They ask you about Dhu'l-Qarnain. 83 Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to every thing. 84 And he followed a road 85 [And he marched westwards] till, when he came to the setting of the sun, it appeared to him that it was setting in a dark, turbid sea; and nearby he found a people [given to every kind of wrongdoing]. We said: "O thou Two-Horned One! Thou mayest either cause [them] to suffer or treat them with kindness!" 86 He replied, "I shall punish the unjust ones among them and then they will return to their Lord, who will punish them more sternly". 87 As for those who believe and do good, they will receive virtuous rewards and We will tell them to do only what they can. 88 Then he followed (another) course. 89 until he reached the rising of the sun, he found it rising upon a nation for whom We provided no veil against it to shade them. 90 So it is; and Our knowledge encompasses all that he possessed. 91 Then he followed a road 92 until he came between two mountains. He found beside them a people who could scarcely understand a word [of his language]. 93 They said: "O Zul-qarnain! the Gog and Magog (People) do great mischief on earth: shall we then render thee tribute in order that thou mightest erect a barrier between us and them? 94 He answered: "Whatever my Lord has granted me is good enough. But help me with your labour and I will erect a rampart between you and them. 95 Bring me blocks of iron to fill up the passage between the two mountains." He told them to ply their bellows until the iron became hot as fire. Then he told them to pour on it molten brass." 96 Such was the rampart that Gog and Magog could not scale, nor could they pierce it. 97 Dhu al-Qarnayn said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: but when the time of my Lord's promise shall come, He will level the rampart with the ground. My Lord's promise always comes true." 98 ۞ Upon that day We shall leave them surging on one another, and the Trumpet shall be blown, and We shall gather them together, 99 And on that Day We shall present Hell to the disbelievers, plain to view, 100 whose eyes were covered against My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. 101
