۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these idols to which you cling so passionately?" 52 They said:"We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said: "Are you expressing your true ideas before us or are you jesting?" 55 He said: "In fact it was your Lord, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them; and I bear witness to this. 56 And by Allah I shall surely devise a plot against your idols after ye turned away backward. 57 He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry]. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!" 59 They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham." 60 They said, “Therefore bring him in front of the people, perhaps they may testify.” 61 They said, “Did you do this to our Gods, O Ibrahim?” 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 Thereupon they turned to their (inner) selves and said (to themselves): "Surely it is you who are the wrong-doers." 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 Abraham said, "So, do you worship something instead of God that can neither benefit you nor harm you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon the things that ye worship besides Allah! Have ye no sense?".. 67 They exclaimed: "Burn him, and [thereby] succour your gods, if you are going to do [anything]!" 68 We said: O fire! be a comfort and peace to Ibrahim; 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 and We delivered him, and Lot, unto the land that We had blessed for all beings. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac, and Jacob as an additional gift, and made them righteous. 72 and made them leaders who would guide [others] in accordance with Our behest: for We inspired them [with a will] to do good works, and to be constant in prayer, and to dispense charity: and Us [alone] did they worship. 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge, and saved him from a people who acted villainously and were certainly wicked and disobedient. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
