The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 125 Have fear of God and obey me. 126 And I do not ask you any reward for it; surely my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds 127 "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them? 128 And seek ye out strongholds, that haply ye may last for ever? 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 succoured you with flocks and sons, 133 And gardens and watersprings. 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers! 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 So they gave him the lie, then We destroyed them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 Yet surely your Lord is mighty and merciful. 140
