(The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah). 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 I seek of you no reward for this; my reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do you build high palaces on every high place, while you do not live in them? 128 Erect palaces (thinking) that you will live for ever, 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 And be careful of (your duty to) Him Who has given you abundance of what you know. 132 Who has provided you with flocks and children 133 and with gardens and springs. 134 I fear the punishment of a terrible day for you. 135 They replied: "It is all the same for us whether you admonish us or not. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
