The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 when their brother Hud said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 Build ye on every eminence a landmark in vanity? 128 and do you take to you castles, haply to dwell forever? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 This is but a custom of the ancients. 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 140
