The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
