The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
