The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif, Lam, Meem. 1 The Romans have been defeated 2 in the neighbouring land; but after their defeat they shall gain victory 3 within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, 4 at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. 5 This is the promise of God. God does not ignore His promise, but many people do not know. 6 they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate things they are utterly unaware. 7 Do they not reflect within themselves: Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but with truth, and (for) an appointed term? And most surely most of the people are deniers of the meeting of their Lord. 8 What, have they never journeyed in the land and seen what was the end of those before them? They were stronger in might than themselves, and they plowed the land and cultivated it more than they themselves have cultivated it. And to them, their Messengers came with clear signs, and Allah did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. 9 The end of the evil-doers was terrible, for they had rejected the revelations of God and mocked them. 10
