Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 The command that We have been sending 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
