Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
