Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
