A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?" 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 "We have fallen into debt; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
