A company of the former peoples 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
