The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but, We see it as near! 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
